What I Didn’t Like:
- Some minor formatting issues that may bother some readers (margins or spacing issues, mostly, nothing related to content). For the purposes of this rating, we’ll ignore those as they don’t really affect the content of the story. Go for the ebook if you’re sensitive to such things.
- A few minor spots where I would’ve liked more detail or to slow things down. Of course, this is the first book in a series so there will be time for some of that later!
- I felt like I got a small spoiler from reading the blurb on the back. Of course, that could just be because I love surprises.
What I Did Like:
- The opener here is well written. You feel like you’re getting almost a soft start and then you are sort of thrown into something different than you expected very early. It’s a great way to keep you on your toes and it automatically makes the story stronger.
- I loved how much science played a quiet role in the story. There are fantasy elements like healing water but so much of the things that feel magical, like the city of Under, have scientific explanations. It’s beautiful!
- Kip, Ren, and Ana are excellent characters. They have good banter, some tension, and solid reasons for their decisions. This little found family is so fun and wonderful, I absolutely will keep reading the series!
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of rebellion YA stories will like this cast of found family standing up for themselves.
