2026 Book Review: Sally’s Lament

by Mari Mancusi

YA Fantasy, 2024 by Random House, 352 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • The vibe somehow felt OFF in the beginning. I can’t explain it. It just didn’t immediately give me Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas vibes, and it SHOULD. That was disappointing.
  • I missed the Halloween vibe. The Christmas stuff was cute but it just wasn’t what I was expecting.
  • Slow start. It took a bit to get used to anything interesting in the story. I found myself a bit bored for the first half or so.

What I Did Like:

  • Cute little Christmas mystery. Sally visits Christmas town, of course, and drags us all into a mystery to find the Christmas spirit. Very cute concept with a Christmas appropriate ending.
  • Jack and Sally are just adorable. The way they help each other, the blooming will they or won’t they romance, all very cute.
  • Zero is, of course, the best part. He’s not featured a ton but he appears when he’s needed and makes the story better (as a good dog always does).

Who Should Read This One:

  • Middle grade-ish readers (it felt a bit younger than YA) who love Nightmare Before Christmas and want a different adventure with our crew will like this one best.

My Rating: 3 Stars
