2026 Book Review: Josh + Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating

by Christina Lauren

A Romance, 2018 by Gallery Books, 309 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Just friends? Please, not one single person reading this book or in this book who is not one of the main characters believes you two are just friends. While that is the entire premise, there are definitely moments that make you roll your eyes because it’s so obvious and they’re so ridiculous for not noticing.
  • This book definitely has that “one conversation could fix this” trope. If you’re not a fan of that, be warned.
  • A bit spicier than usual for Christina Lauren. Not necessarily a bad thing, but (again) worth noting.

What I Did Like:

  • Banter. If you’re a banter person, this is your book. They’re hilarious and well written, they’re both quick witted, and the way they connect is top tier.
  • The romance is believable. They get each other and the chemistry makes sense. This doesn’t feel forced or unnatural and that’s the point.
  • The ending works. While it utilizes a trope that can be hit or miss, I think it’s done well. Flashing forward to the epilogue was a good call and makes it a bit more grounded.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Friends to lovers romance fans who like a little spice and good banter.
