2023 Book Review: The Flying Z

by Leo W Banks

A Mystery/Thriller, 2023 by Brash Books, 272 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • If I’m being picky, the characters feel a little cliche at times.
  • The romance was a bit too instalove for my tastes. It also felt misogynistic in the “give up everything and join me in keeping my life the same” kind of way.
  • There are slower parts in the middle where I wanted things to pick up speed a bit.

What I Did Like:

  • The opening scene sets the tone of this book well. You’re instantly sure where you are and what challenges will face these characters. I liked it right away and the characters had good chemistry from the jump.
  • I appreciated the authenticity of the Arizona ranch presentation, specifically the honor paid to Mexican culture and the treatment of the non hostile visitors.
  • The ending works. The surprise at the end worked. There’s enough tied up to be happy here and keep thinking but there’s enough left in the air to possibly spawn a sequel. My favorite kind of ending!

Who Should Read This One:

  • Readers who like a little mystery, a little cute romance, and some danger all in a western setting.

My Rating: 4 Stars
