2023 Book Review: The Chalice of the Gods

by Rick Riordan

MG Fantasy, 2023 by Disney Hyperion, 268 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Is this out of order? I can swear I’ve read books in this Universe where Percy is already in college. So going back to his senior year was interesting. Why didn’t we get these in order? Either that or I’m mistaken. But I feel like The Sun and the Star, at least, referenced a college-aged Percy.
  • I wanted more. The book is a bit short and leaves openings for sequels. I wanted to keep reading and get more of the story.
  • Lack of some of your favorite characters. Some are there but some are missing from this particular story and their absence is felt.

What I Did Like:

  • PERCY! It’s been a while since we got his voice and POV for a book and it was absolutely perfect from page 1. It’s HIS voice and it drops you right back into his story in a way you didn’t realize you were missing.
  • As always the use of Greek Gods (both major and minor) is accurate and informative, but delivered in a way that is interesting and modern. Fans love Riordan for exactly this-bringing mythology to a new generation. It’s brilliant.
  • Quick and satisfying read. It fits into what we know of the world while still adding a little something.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of the Percy Jackson series or readers who want to give it a try. This is a shorter one so it would be a good introduction. It does mention a few things from previous adventures, but nothing that would completely ruin any of the previous stories.

My Rating: 4 Stars
