2023 book review: Sword and Mirror

by Melissa McGhee

Middle grade Fantasy, published 2023 by Wayward Books, 191 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Some of the words used might be a little above reading level for this age group. It wasn’t excessive, but could be intimidating for some readers.
  • There were a few grammatical errors also, additional words used or incorrect spellings. Didn’t take away from the story but was noticeable while reading.

What I Did Like:

  • The setup for this as a saga was spot on. This world is intriguing and has so many good storylines already.
  • One of my favorite aspects of this world was that Moray was actually the heir. Being the youngest, the reasoning for why they select the youngest as the heir was obvious once I read it. (and who doesn’t love a few good female leaders)

Who Should Read This One:

  • Children/middle grade and anyone looking for a quick but all written fantasy read would definitely love to pick this one up.

My Rating:

  • 4 stars
