A Mystery/Thriller, 2023 by Random House, 362 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- A few minor inconsistencies or typos. Nothing major and all easy to ignore.
- The connection between Jess and Mike read as instalove at first, which is my least favorite trope. Honestly it still leaned that way a few times.
- A lot of things felt a little too convenient. There are things that just magically work out perfectly, despite being fraught with danger. It happens multiple times. One example is a car whose battery was dead is lucky enough to start on the next page. Things like that are excusable once or twice, you can chalk them up to luck, but repeatedly they start to seem too good to be true.
What I Did Like:
- I adore books with embedded puzzles! I want all the pictures and all the solutions. I want to enjoy the solution WITH the character. There are a few of those in here, which was fun!
- Loved the haunted house vibes from the journal. That was like a quick break from the mystery, although they tied together, and it worked!
- The unscrambling of the mystery leading to deeper questions and more digging. That’s always a fun way to unscramble a mystery. It’s more complex and satisfying that way.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of The DaVinci Code will like the similar feel of this one. The mystery is deep and rooted in religion.
My Rating: 4 Stars
- A solid mystery with multiple layers and good characters.
