A Fantasy, 2021 by Silver Sun Books, 384 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- For all her talk about not trusting anyone, Jack sure keeps falling back into trusting people you wish she wouldn’t. That isn’t really a negative about the writing, just a point that irked me as a reader because I wanted Jack to learn from her mistakes!
- The betrayal HURT, man. Call it a content warning. I felt as betrayed as Jack, honestly, and it stung.
- Content warnings: here’s the page from the author (we love an author who is honest with content warnings)
What I Did Like:
- You easily fall right back into the world. It’s a seamless transition from book 1 while still giving enough of a reminder of what happened in the past to keep you on track if it’s been awhile since you read the first one.
- The characters. As it was in the first book, these characters are great! The banter, the depth, and the tension all work. This group feels so real. This could easily become a comfort read because you can surround yourself with this entire group (yes, even Drake).
- Again the entire premise works. The idea of vampires policing other vampires regarding their ability to keep the secret of vampires safe from humans is wonderful. This particular installment adds another level of tension we, perhaps, hadn’t thought of and that makes the book even better.
- That last line sets up book 3 PERFECTLY.
Who Should Read This One:
- Paranormal fans, this is vampire lore well written. There are things you haven’t heard of mixed with things you have in a way that just brings the vampire legends up to the modern day perfectly. Highly recommended.
- Mystery fans, stay with me … this is essentially a detective novel. This group of vampires (called Seekers) are the detective force for other vampires. Their procedures, reliance on science, and task force meetings will appeal to mystery fans who enjoy detective novels. Highly recommended.
My Rating: 5 Stars
- As it was with the first book (May Day) this one continues to be a seamless blend of genres that will appeal to multiple readers. This series is worth your time!
