2024 Book Review: Christine

by Stephen King

A Horror, 1983 by Viking, 411 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • As it typical for King, you’ll often have thoughts or asides that are unnecessary and bordering on inappropriate. They’re easy to ignore or skip if that’s not your cup of tea.
  • The hints to “big things” coming in the beginning felt a bit over the top. Almost every moment is set up by the narrator with a hint about things getting worse. It was a bit much.
  • The romance line felt forced. Of course, since we’re reading an adult story featuring teenagers if sort of fits. Still, it feels forced and fake.

What I Did Like:

  • The story, which is one I’ve heard pieces of before but don’t remember reading, is captivating. You are drawn in by the small changes in characters, including Christine, as the story goes on. They are like clues dropped throughout the story and it would be fun to read this one again and see if you catch more of them.
  • Perfect ending. A little predictable, sure. But if it had ended any other way, I would’ve been highly disappointed. This ending wrapped up some storylines in a satisfying way while still letting the story linger in your brain. Perfect.
  • The paranormal things are well written. They’re not over-explained, instead telling the reader what happened and letting the reader draw any conclusions themselves.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Horror fans, this is a classic for a reason. If you’ve missed this one over the years, it’s worth a read.

My Rating: 4 Stars
