2024 Book Review: From Dead to Worse

by Charlaine Harris

A Paranormal Romance, 2008 by Ace Books, 368 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • This one feels like it has lazier writing techniques than the rest of the series. Telling vs showing, boring inner monologue that seems vapid, and cyclical storylines. Maybe this series has gone on too long?
  • Heavily political (um, for vampires haha). This was a positive in the previous book for me. Somehow it felt more predictable and dry this time around.
  • It felt like not much happened in this book. If you were to outline major plot points for this series, none would come from this book. Is that concerning? Probably.

What I Did Like:

  • Eric. The bright spot in this book is definitely Eric who continues to be completely himself in a series full of characters who seem to change loyalties.
  • That ending. Just when you thought the series might be going on past its own life, that ending gives it a second chance.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of the series will read this, as I did, because it comes next. Then we’ll read the next one because of this ending. Then, ultimately, we’ll forget this one ever happened.

My Rating: 2 Stars

  • Look, I’ll keep reading the series but a throwaway book this late in the series is problematic.
