A Mystery/Thriller, 2017 by Doubleday, 290 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- You’re removed from the action, in a way, during this story. You are sort of watching it happen without being up close to it. That makes it seem a little distant.
- Some of the heist details are probably completely sensationalized and could absolutely never happen like that. But they’re fun to read!
- Author bashing is an odd choice. No one is safe, either. Indies, commercial fiction, literary fiction … they’re all trashed and torn apart. It feels awfully negative for a book that is supposed to be about rare and special books. Also, working in the world of book sales I can say that some of the bookstore stuff was sensationalized as well.
What I Did Like:
- Interesting take on a heist type story. You’re not part of the “bad guys” getting to root for them, like in the Ocean movies. You’re also not a cop, trying to catch the bad guys. The distance sort of allows you to decide for yourself who you’re rooting for. It’s interesting.
- The setup for Mercer is great. I mean, who wouldn’t agree to this! Sign me up. It sounds fun, intriguing, and just the right amount of dangerous. I loved her story arc.
- The ending is satisfying. You get enough answers to be happy and the way things work out sort of works for all parties. I can’t fathom what a sequel of this book would need to cover, but apparently one exists.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of heist type mystery books who want something a little slower that takes place over a longer period of time.
My Rating: 3 Stars
- The setup to this one is interesting but the slower pace makes it a bit more niche, since things of this nature are normally fast moving.
