2024 Book Review: Dead and Gone

by Charlaine Harris

A Paranormal Romance, 2009 by Ace Books, 320 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • This one moves away from vampire politics, spending more time with the shifters and the fairies. While that’s not all bad, I missed the vampire stuff (which is something I never thought I’d say).
  • Bill is getting tiresome and predictable. As a character, he’s lost his charm for sure.
  • I wanted more of that intriguing storyline the 8th book ended with. Instead, it barely earned a mention and died off. I’m sure it’s making a comeback in a later book, but I didn’t want to wait for it!

What I Did Like:

  • The opening is off to a good start! It feels more like the early books in the series, action-packed and emotional right from the jump.
  • The extra focus on the fairies wasn’t bad. I liked the details we did get and the danger they brought to the story.  Plus, they bring out the best side of Sookie’s creativity with regard to arming herself!
  • The danger was upped in this one which sort of brought a darker mood to the story. Honestly, I liked that! It made it different enough from the rest and that’s important in a series that’s gone on this long.
  • The romance line worked. Of course, I’ve been a fan of one particular suitor for a long time so that’s probably a spoiler of sorts. Some scenes were spicier than the early books, so be warned if you aren’t a fan of that.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Obviously, fans of the series will keep going.
  • If you like vampires, werewolves, telepathy, and slightly spicy scenes in otherwise action packed books … give the series a try!

My Rating: 3 Stars
