A Mystery/Thriller, 2022 by Grand Central Publishing, 593 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- Definitely got patriarchy and misogyny vibes from this one, probably because of the mass amount of commuters ogling a woman in her own backyard in the very early chapters. Once I was alert to it, I felt like I was seeing it everywhere.
- I didn’t like Devine. Since he appears to be the main character of this series, that could be a problem. I felt like he was frustrating and negative toward himself. Who knows, maybe he’ll change as the series goes on.
- The ending felt a bit too convenient. All wrapped up nicely, which doesn’t seem very realistic. But it reads like a movie so that’s something.
What I Did Like:
- The mystery grabs hold of you quickly and keeps your interest. There are a lot of layers here coupled with lots of unanswered questions. You get lost in the case, which is what makes this one fun.
- There are a lot of clues and misdirections to keep the reader guessing. That’s always a fun way to have a mystery book progress because it keeps you in the story.
- There are some hints at things/characters we could bring back later in the series. No spoilers, of course, but I’m looking forward to seeing more cases.
Who Should Read This One:
- Mystery action movie fans. Hang on, I’m aware this isn’t a movie. But many parts of it read like those action movies with one guy against the evil corporations. If you’re a fan of those, this is your book!
