A Mystery/Thriller, 2023 by Poisoned Pen Press, 358 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- The same vibe and the same voice as everything else I’ve read from this author, which is only something you’d notice if you read multiples. They all have this something-is-being-kept-from-you vibe. It’s great, normally, but once you start to expect it, it becomes super easy to find.
- The autistic coded character was poorly written. It felt like every autism stereotype was thrown into a single character. It could’ve been better, honestly.
- No characters to like. If you’re not a fan of that particular technique, maybe find a different book. These characters are all beyond flawed, many cruising right into awful zones at full speed. They’re difficult to read about and hard to relate to.
What I Did Like:
- The email content provided a change up in the delivery, which added a little fun to the story. I always find myself able to read a book even faster when it changes up styles like that!
- Twisty and shocking. Every assumption you make is wrong, which is fun in this kind of thriller.
- Caleb. He’s a good character, relatable. He has goals that make sense and his grief feels realistic. He’s the only decent guy buried in a cast of horrible people.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of thrillers with so many twists you’ll get whiplash. You aren’t worried about good people or realism, you just want to be shocked.
