Fiction Recommendation Experts

2024 Book Review: Just for the Summer

by Abby Jimenez

A Romance, 2024 by Forever, 432 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Not a fully original concept. It’s a slight spin on it, but we’ve all heard this idea before. I stuck with it to see if it puts any spin on the idea.
  • Some of the repeated phrases get a bit annoying. Yes, they’re accurate for a feeling.  Still, the ninth time it’s used it gets a little old.
  • Predictable ending, which is common for a romance.

What I Did Like:

  • I LOVE an author who front loads content warnings. Beautiful disclaimer, well done list.
  • Right away the banter is perfect. In a romcom you want that back-and-forth that makes you laugh. This has that!
  • The addition of social media was well handled. It didn’t come across as fake or heavy-handed. It worked.
  • Love the mental health representations and the focus on healing. The author states in an interview that she worked with mental health experts and professionals on these characters. That’s definitely a focus of this book and the care and attention paid to healing is evident. I LOVED that.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of romcoms. The banter between these characters is excellent.
  • Readers who like contemporary stories that confront trauma. These characters are going through some things and they confront it all head on. It’s well written.

My Rating: 5 stars

  • The inclusion of mental health in a positive way cannot be understated here. It only solidified this as a contemporary recommendation as well as a cute romcom one.
