YA Science Fiction, Special Edition 2024 by Sphere Publishing, 347 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- Related to the ebook ONLY (and therefore will not affect my rating) the print is not resizable as this is a pdf file. On a typical ereader, it’s very small. Consider this a warning, if you have trouble reading small print I’d go with the printed version.
- I don’t think this one is truly young adult. It deals with some adult concepts (like ordering a woman) as offhand sort of situations, has romance that dances with that adult line, and overall deals with writing style and themes that feel like they’re intended for an adult audience. Basically, this doesn’t read with a voice or appeal I’d expect for a young adult audience.
- Sparse dialogue makes this a very dry story. It’s a lot of telling and action, which affects the pacing of the story.
- Age gap romance is never my favorite. Plus, when you add in the idea of how old this girl was when they originally met and the fact that he was an authority figure of sorts for her, it gets a little cringe.
What I Did Like:
- The other worlds and creatures are well thought out. They’re not things you’ve heard of before, they’re products of the author’s imagination. But they’re detailed and specific, which is good.
- The experimentation and changes to the main character as he moves through various alien worlds was interesting.
- The motivation for the main character is always clear, even when it changes. He has clear goals and works toward them.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of science fiction that focuses on alien races or creatures.
My Rating: 2 Stars
- For me the inaccurate age category is problematic. Additionally, the text was very dry and affected the pacing of the story.
