2024 Book Review: The Passengers

by John Marrs

A Mystery/Thriller, 2019 by Berkley, 400 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Minor thing that only affects the audiobook (and therefore will not affect my rating): the audiobook has multiple narrators and they’re not all recorded at the same volume, meaning you’re adjusting your volume all the time
  • Content Warning: Suicide, violence, death
  • Part 1 establishes a lot of characters in very similar situations. This can cause some confusion around who people were when they come up again. This is pretty common with multiple POV stories and it clears up as the story progresses.

What I Did Like:

  • The concept is thrilling and intense. It moves quickly and keeps your heart rate up the entire time.
  • This book does an amazing job of giving you mixed feelings about everything: characters, autonomous cars, social media, news, etc. One page will have you feeling a certain way and the next page will have you questioning that. It’s really brilliant writing.
  • You definitely won’t have the entire story figured out. No spoilers, so that’s all I’ll say.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of thrillers that get your heart rate up, surprise you, and take a hard look at things in our society.
  • Fans of hard hitting contemporary books that put our society under a microscope.

My Rating: 5 Stars

  • The way this one analyzes things and almost changes the reader’s mind on multiple occasions is masterful.
