2025 Book Review: Love That Dog

by Sharon Creech

MG Poetry, 2001 by Harper Collins, 112 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • You could argue that this one is too short. You’ll want more story, more time with the characters.
  • It does set some unrealistic expectations for authors answering letters. Be warned if you use this with kiddos, you’ll need to address that.

What I Did Like:

  • All the feels. I’m a huge poetry fan and this captures why really well. This one gives you all the feels in just a few short poems.
  • Fun formatting! I especially like the idea of the poet wanting white space and lamenting missing white space. So important!
  • Character growth. I wasn’t expecting that from a poetry story, but this one shows the growth from someone who didn’t want to write poetry to a proud poet!

Who Should Read This One:

  • This is perfect for poetry fans.
  • EXCELLENT for teaching poetry! If you’re a 4th-8th grade poetry teacher, GET THIS ONE for your collection.

My Rating: 4 Stars

  • Exactly what I wanted. The perfect little poetry book.
