What I Didn’t Like:
- Content Warning: some sexual content
- Note: I’m reading this as a stand alone, having not read the first book. I’d say they work fine alone. I wasn’t lost and I didn’t ever feel like I was missing content.
- You’ll be able to pronounce practically none of the fantasy names here with confidence. Consider it a content warning if that bothers you.
- The pacing is leisurely, meaning it intentionally moves a little slow. This can be tough to take yourself through quickly.
What I Did Like:
- Not that it affects the rating at all but WOW that cover is gorgeous!
- The characters are introduced well enough to help you understand (or remember) what might have been covered in book one. You don’t feel lost. In fact, you feel like you get to jump right in without a lot of build up and set up.
- Bettina and Cosima are solid characters. The world here is fantasy, obviously, but still these two have realistic goals and relatable relationships. They’re easy to connect to and their stories pull you in.
- The ending works. It felt complete and satisfying.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fantasy readers who want something immersive and detailed.
