2025 Book Review: The Mother Next Door

by Tara Laskowski

A Mystery/Thriller, 2021 by Graydon House, 340 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • This is a multi POV story. The excessive head hopping at the beginning does get a little confusing.
  • Predictable. That’s a huge negative for a story like this, which attempts to surprise you and shock you. I had the entire thing figured out.
  • Anticlimactic. The end of the book offers nothing new or interesting. It just sort of ends.
  • Slow. The story takes a very long time to let go of some of the secrets. You craved tidbits to keep you turning pages and were left disappointed.

What I Did Like:

  • Halloween vibes. The entire story centers around a Halloween block party and a Halloween mystery. There’s even a town legend about a ghost.
  • Drama. If you like drama between girl groups to be messy, this one delivers. Think Mean Girls, but grown up. The cattiness is the star of the show here.
  • Some leave-you-thinking to the ending, which I like. No spoilers.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Readers who like contemporary dramas may like this one more than mystery/thriller fans. The star of this plotline is definitely the drama of the clique.

My Rating: 2 Stars

  • As a mystery/thriller, this one fell flat. Too predictable and too slow.
