2025 Book Review: Where the Bones Lie

by Nick Kolakowski

A Mystery/Thriller, 2025 by Datura Books, 400 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Some of the reckless actions taken by the main character made me roll my eyes. There HAS to be a better way to do things. He’s impulsive to a fault. It can be tough to read.
  • The story did absolutely nothing to capitalize on what could have been great chemistry between Madeline and Dash. I’m not even talking about a romance subplot, but a chemistry or banter between the two would’ve been nice.
  • The final chapter seemed like an obvious indicator that this could be a series, which is fine. But previous to this, it didn’t feel like that at all. That makes that final chapter almost feel forced.

What I Did Like:

  • The initial chapter sets up the character well. You understand him right away and that he’s going to be a complicated guy. The fact that he’s clearly not perfect helps him feel realistic and relatable right from the drop.
  • This is an interesting take on the classic PI story. He’s NOT a PI, but he’s behaving like one. I like when tropes are subverted so that was fun.
  • The twists in the storyline worked. Enough answers were given to satisfy the reader.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of the private investigator trope in a mystery will like this one.

My Rating: 3 Stars
