2025 Book Review: Ghostland

An American History in Haunted Places by Colin Dickey

A Nonfiction, 2016 by Viking, 320 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Lots of jumps in topics. We don’t really stay on any one particular ghost story long, instead jumping from one to the other with very little to connect them together.
  • Ghosts and legends from a skeptical viewpoint. If you’re an opinionated believer and want to stay that way, skip this one.
  • Some stories or legends are not given enough page time, in my opinion.

What I Did Like:

  • A charismatic storytelling style that lends itself to this material. This nonfiction doesn’t feel like reading a textbook, instead it settles you down to hear a tale.
  • This one is intended to be a history of America through haunted legends and that is what it is. Highlighting some of the more negative aspects of our history that have led to ghost stories, this one really shines a light on America.
  • Brief mentions of some of the most famously haunted places are interesting and fun.

Who Should Read This One:

  • American history readers who want something a little different.

My Rating: 3 Stars
