A Mystery/Thriller, 2018 by Quirk Books, 304 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- Using a real person as your fictional main character is a really weird vibe. It partially feels almost insulting to the real person. I think I’d be really offended if it were me or someone in my family. As it is, I just thought it was weird.
- The pacing is clunky. There’s a lot of unnecessary details and things that make the story drag. It makes the entire story feel slower than it needs to feel, which is a tough feat for such a short book.
- The story is technically a mystery but it honestly reads like a sort of joke or skit. It’s trying too hard.
What I Did Like:
- If you step outside of the names of these characters and read them as fictional people, which is really what they should have been since so many liberties were taken with their backstories, they read as a quirky bromance that has potential to be funny.
- The mystery pulls in drug running and overdose, which feels ripped right out of the headlines. That can be good if done right.
Who Should Read This One:
- If you’re looking for a campy sort of mystery, like a fanfiction story with these real people, this would probably work for you.
