What I Didn’t Like:
- The time jump early in the story feels like it robs you of a chance to get to know the two characters up front. I would’ve preferred a bit more time with them together to really understand their friendship.
- A bit predictable in that I felt like I was a step ahead of the little twists, always figuring them out early.
- I wasn’t entirely convinced that this friendship was as powerful as it needed to be. They don’t seem to be in sync and they don’t even, really, seem to like each other. It makes the whole premise feel a little far-fetched.
What I Did Like:
- The vampire lore is well done. Blood lust, ancient rules, and all sorts of interesting takes of how humans would react to vampires.
- The road trip aspect was fun. Sure, they’re in danger, but we got the small towns and weird motels. We got uneven driving time, waking up to find the other driver left you on E, and meeting new (odd) people. All in all, this works as a road trip story.
- Good opening book. This book sets up the worldbuilding well, giving you a lot of the main players and lore you’ll need for the series. At the same time, it offers a solid plot of its own that captures your interest. You don’t feel like you’re still waiting for the story to start. Instead, you just want more stories from the world.
Who Should Read This One:
- Vampire fans who like when their vampires are animalistic and feral, as opposed to sparkly and romantic.
