2025 Book Review: Bloom

by Nicola Skinner

MG Fantasy, 2019 by Harper Collins, 368 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • As is typical for middle grade books, this one has a lot of over-the-top and obviously bad decisions from adults in charge. It does come with good lessons, of course, but as an adult it makes you roll your eyes a bit.
  • The main character is naive, which is also common for a middle grade book.
  • This one really is intended for a middle grade audience (think 10-14 or so)  because it is a bit immature in a lot of ways. That won’t affect my rating because the author and publisher are very clear about this being their intended age range. BUT, if you’re not a reader who normally delves into books for this age group, proceed with caution.

What I Did Like:

  • OMG the boards on this hardcover are BEAUTIFUL. That won’t affect my rating, I just had to point that out.
  • The THIS IS A WARNING chapter sets the voice of the MC well. You understand the sense of humor right away and connect with her in just a few short pages.
  • Adorable character growth from the main character and an antagonist combined with beautiful illustrations and a solid message.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Middle grade readers who want fun and a little fantasy!

My Rating: 4 Stars

  • The storyline is original and the message is great.
