2025 Book Review: The Merry Maids

by Stefanie Contreras

YA Science Fiction, Independently Published by 2019, 236 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Some awkward phrasing or repetition early in the book that takes a second read or slows the pacing of the story.
  • Unnecessary details are left in, slowing the pace of some scenes. Similarly, some deep conversations feel almost rushed.
  • I’d like to see more time spent on the various abilities and why some have them. It’s sort of glossed over here, although this is Book 1 so it could be coming later.

What I Did Like:

  • The characters are great. There’s depth to all of them, even smaller characters. As a team, their dynamic adds to the story.
  • Well written action scenes. Intense, well described, and easy to picture.
  • The ending sets up Book 2 well. It’s obvious where we might go in the sequel and what we’d hope to get out of it.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Scifi fans, don’t be fooled by the cover and the title, this is a hardcore space Scifi that doesn’t play around.

My Rating: 4 Stars
