2025 Book Review: The Sound of Tuning Out

by Shane W O’Haire

A Mystery/Thriller, Independently Published in 2025, 414 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • This one is marked as HORROR but it starts off slow and more like a mystery/thriller. In fact, I’d call the entire novel mystery/thriller, but that’s a fine line. Not a bad thing, just something to note.
  • Some grammatical or typographical errors. Nothing extreme that detracts from the reading.
  • The jump from the case to the courtroom is jarring. I actually had to go back and start that part again after I had a feel for this new character.
  • I like endings that leave you thinking and don’t wrap everything up. That being said, this needed a little more wrapping. There’s a bit too much left unanswered and to the imagination.

What I Did Like:

  • The style of the chapters is different enough to keep you from forgetting which is which and it builds suspense as you wait to see if/how they all connect.
  • Including everything in this one works. Too often mystery/thrillers will only go so far and then they’ll just stop. This one goes beyond who did it and ventures into the courtroom as well. I like that.
  • There are a lot of twists and unexpected surprises in here, which is always fun!

Who Should Read This One:

  • Readers who like mystery/thrillers that unravel slowly and keep some of their secrets will like this one.
