2025 Book Review: Beyond the Treeline

by Mark A Ellis

A Science Fiction, 2025 by Ananta Publishing, 453 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Some repetition of ideas or phrases. This can be a tool to help a reader realize something is important, obviously, but when it’s overused it makes the reader either frustrated or like the writer assumes they’re stupid (neither of those is the best feeling).
  • Some of the language feels unnatural or forced. I got particularly annoyed with the overuse of K.
  • I never believed in the love story arc. Maybe it’s because I didn’t fully feel connected to the characters or maybe it was bordering on instalove but, for whatever reason, I didn’t buy it. This is problematic, since a major piece of the storyline requires you to believe the characters are in love.

What I Did Like:

  • The AIC component here is fascinating. It’s not even REALLY the science we’re discussing but it is sort of ever present in the book and is almost terrifying when you realize how close we could be to something like this and the consequences it could have.
  • Science left in science fiction. This is always something I enjoy! There’s descriptions here of REAL branches of science, of course taken too far in the story. It is grounded in POSSIBLE.
  • The implications of the technology used are well explored here. There are plenty of examples of reasons why taking technology this far is a bad idea baked into the storyline.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of heavy Scifi with AI explorations and possible alternate uses of technology.

My Rating: 3 Stars
