2025 Book Review: A Man Named Dave

by Dave Pelzer

A Nonfiction, 2000 by Plume, 334 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • As expected, sections of this one are hard to read. Dave’s background comes up frequently and he does have interactions, as an adult, with his birth mother.
  • This is supposed to be the most uplifting of the three books. While there are aspects of it that are uplifting, I found myself sad for what the brothers went through. It’s hard to read about Dave dismissing their journeys. I don’t think he ever fully acknowledges the fact that it was lucky he was removed from that home when they were all left behind.

What I Did Like:

  • Although this is the third book in the saga of Dave’s life, he does a great job of recapping his experience so that it’s not necessary for you to have recently read the previous two.
  • The moment where Dave confronts his past with his wife and son are probably the strongest parts of this book and the reason it is inspiring.

Who Should Read This One:

  • This book is meant to inspire those who need to let go of pasts and forgive. It’s intended to show that you can move on. For those people, this book does what it intends to do.
