2025 Book Review: The Trouble with Charlie

by Kenneth Preston

A Mystery/Thriller, Independently Published in 2020, 260 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • This started on a weird note and then took an even weirder turn. I kept going simply because if they could convince me, it would be a great twist. I’d say they ended up making it MILDLY believable.
  • Repetition of ideas and phrases. I’m sure this was being used as a way to hint to the reader some of the things that were coming, but it’s too heavy handed and makes it cumbersome to read instead.
  • Some grammatical or typographical errors. I was always able to figure out the intended meaning, but it occasionally took me a second read.

What I Did Like:

  • The hints that there are things you don’t know are intriguing, leading you to look for secrets between every line. That’s always fun!
  • I will say there were some unique aspects to the story even when compared with similar things. I can’t say more because of spoilers, but I like unique!
  • An ending that leaves room for thinking about after the book is closed, which is my favorite type!

Who Should Read This One:

  • Readers who like shocking books with big secrets.

My Rating: 3 Stars

  • While not perfect, this was a fun ride.
