A Horror Short Stories, 2023 by Falstaff Books, 158 Pages
Note: This tells you it is best enjoyed with its companion book but we’re reading/reviewing it on its own to see how it stands alone.
What I Didn’t Like:
- Many of these are more poems or flash fiction than they are short stories. While that’s not necessarily a problem, I wasn’t expecting it so it shocked me.
- I appreciate a good short story as a snapshot of something. Many of these felt like they were snapshots taken at the wrong time. They were just BEFORE something I may have wanted to know about, for example, and stopped before the good stuff. That was frustrating.
- Really this one could stand alone but would likely be a better experience as a buddy read with the companion text.
What I Did Like:
- Pitch was an excellent short story! Exactly the kind of story I was in the mood for: the tension ups as the story progresses, there’s unexplained stuff going on, and the ending was perfect. My favorite in the collection!
- The collection contains a lot of creepy vibes, darker atmosphere, or generally thrilling type concepts. It’s always good when a collection of stories can all bring a similar vibe, so I enjoyed that.
- Well written and well edited collection.
Who Should Read This One:
- Very short (almost flash fiction) fans or people who generally like more off the wall content. I’d suggest doing the companion books together instead of reading this one as a stand alone.
