2025 Book Review: Dead Man’s Game

by Paul Carr

A Mystery/Thriller, 2019 by Worldwide Mystery, 290 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Some unnecessary details. I think the intention is to show a softer, more normal side of the detective. But it often just bogs down the story.
  • I love Cupcake but shouldn’t we be concerned about the legality of his presence?
  • We’re supposed to like Dalton but underneath how “good guy” he comes across, higher ups don’t like him, people betray him, he hides some facts, and he looks the other way for some illegal actions. That’s giving corrupt cop and I don’t like that.

What I Did Like:

  • The mystery is solid. I didn’t have it all figured out. Including the key player whose part I never guessed.
  • Although it’s the second book featuring this detective, you don’t have to read them in order. This serves as a stand alone book.
  • Some of the details dropped into this one help to give the book realism: cops having other cases to close that aren’t related, writing up reports (which are shared with you, at least in part), and desk duty after an incident. These may not have been 100% accurate but their inclusion is an attempt to bring more realism.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of a semi loose canon detective.

My Rating: 3 Stars
