What I Didn’t Like:

• Starting chapters with dates is something I personally don’t like, but I know it’s a weird personal thing. This one, since it’s a sort of fantasy date system, was even tougher to swallow. I’ll admit I just ignored them and read on. 
• There isn’t much distinction between the characters’ voices. It worked for me because the entire story is in third person, so I just assumed the same narrator was telling the story and we were jumping to see who the focus was for that chapter, as opposed to actually changing point of view. 
• This whole book is sort of like world building or a prequel to what I imagine is the bulk of the story. Essentially, this one doesn’t have much in the way of plot. It’s setting up for plot later, if that makes sense.

What I Did Like:

• The opening of this one gives me Umbrella Academy vibes and I mean that in the BEST way! 
• The fantasy creatures were a welcome addition. From some that I’d heard of, like sirens and dragons, to some that I hadn’t … this story was packed with fun creatures that added tension to the story. 
• The ending is great! From their big realization (no spoilers) to the end of the book we move at a rapid pace, finally get a hint on the personalities and struggles, and really set up for an amazing book 2. 

Who Should Read This One:

• Fans of YA fantasy who want fantasy creatures, an immersive world, and a series to dig their teeth into.
