2025 Book Review: The Living and the Undead

by John Raven

A Horror, 2025 by Warbreck Publishing, 343 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • There’s a character who speaks almost exclusively without articles (like “the”) making her dialogue feel very choppy and awkward. I’m sure there was a reason but reading it was rough. Combine that with the petty annoyance of character’s using each other’s names too often and the result is a stilted dialogue.
  • The way these guys talk about women and sex is not something I feel the need to read or be around. Someone assumes a woman trying to have a word with him privately must want to have sex with him, there’s an actual sexual assault, and that’s not even all the issues. Honestly, there’s a lot more men than women in this book and maybe that contributes to this overwhelming “locker room” vibe.
  • The story offered a lot of plot elements we’ve seen in horror before. Not much of this story came off as unique.

What I Did Like:

  • The addition of vampire lore to zombie lore was fun. I hadn’t seen much crossover between the two before and I would’ve liked that explored a bit more.
  • The ending of the story offered a lot more action, mystery, and intensity.

Who Should Read This One:

  • If you’re a diehard zombie fan, you want something that brings in vampires, and you aren’t critical about “locker room” style talk you may like this one more than I did.

My Rating: 2 Stars

  • For me the toxic masculinity was problematic and turned me completely off of the story.
