Fiction Recommendation Experts

2025 Book Review: Circle for the Earth

by Daphne Singingtree

A Science Fiction, 2024 by Eagletree Press, 352 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • I had a lot of questions about the acceptance of the time travel theory and the way it was immediately decided what their purpose was. It’s lofty and cool, but it is a bit weird that everyone just went alone with it. In general, there’s not enough questioning from the people who time traveled here.
  • Not enough time is spent explaining how the author saw this technology working. For example, the people now in the 1700s continue to use WiFi, email, Google maps, and texting. In Scifi this COULD be explained but not enough of an attempt is made to explain it. No one even questions it. In reality, nothing that relies on something OUTSIDE of your zone should work unless you’re giving us a reason to believe that it is working.
  • The politics of this are incredibly dry. It’s like emotion was completely removed from the situation, which would be IMPOSSIBLE because people would be emotional about something this drastic. I think this was where the author wanted to focus but, unfortunately, because it’s so dry and devoid of emotion it doesn’t land.
  • I don’t feel like there’s enough exploration beyond the circle by either the group inside of it or by the group outside of it. That needed further exploration and page time.

What I Did Like:

  • The crimes and fallout from those after an event like this was probably the most realistic part about this book. That part is well written and compelling.
  • The concept is obviously one that the author feels strongly about and that comes through. The idea has merit.

Who Should Read This One:

  • I can’t recommend this one in this state. It is a solid idea but it feels too much like an unexplored concept. There are a lot of unanswered questions and too much telling vs showing us the story. There’s also a lack of character connection. For that reason, I feel like it fails the science fiction audience it would normally draw.

My Rating: 1 Star
