What I Didn’t Like:
- There are a lot of characters here. While you can infer a lot about their personalities and importance by their names, which are also their most important trait, it’s a lot to keep track of and can get confusing.
- The coffee opening helps you relate to Death but doesn’t really fit once you’ve unpacked the whole story. The more I learned about Death as a character, the more it felt like a cheap tool for connection.
- You don’t get all the closure you might want for every character. Personally I don’t mind that, it lets me imagine how things go from here. It might bother some readers.
What I Did Like:
- A compelling mystery. You are just as invested as Death in finding out what is happening and what it could all mean. The clues sprinkled throughout the plot are intriguing and keep you turning pages.
- Lots of great characterizations of the traits or other fantasy beings. My personal favorites were the twins, I feel like I would get wrapped up in wasting time betting with them.
- The ending works. It made the contract pieces scattered through the story important, gave closure where it was necessary, and worked for the story in a very bittersweet sort of way.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of sort of supernatural fantasy, this embodies Death, Life and their crew in a beautiful way.
