YA Fantasy, Independently Published in 2017, 420 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- After the opening, which was captivating, the story takes a rather slow turn. There’s a lot of time spent on traveling and hiding that drags the plot a bit.
- This is clearly an opening book in a series, it spends a lot of time on world building and character development. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, just be warned that this one isn’t going to stand alone well.
- This book spans a long time. That means you have a lot of years and changes thrown at you for your main character. Again, not necessarily a bad thing, just be aware.
What I Did Like:
- The opening of the story is very intriguing. The work of the wizards, the town’s fear of their power, and the obvious danger involved for our main character are all very well written from the start. This all becomes important later.
- Agrad’s character development is well done. You watch him grow from a scared boy into an impressive man and the journey is fraught with danger. He was relatable and real, even with his faults.
- The world building is immersive. The Magic system is detailed, the Gods are well written, and you just feel educated on their ways after this first book.
- The reincarnation storylines were all handled well and added to the plot in great ways.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of high fantasy who like immersive worlds and diverse casts will adore this series.
