2026 Book Review: Triptych

by Karin Slaughter

A Mystery/Thriller, 2006 by Delacorte Press, 393 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Content Warning: Crime scene descriptions, statutory rape, spousal abuse, discussions of sexual assault, threats of violent sexual assault
  • The opening to this one has weird vibes. You don’t like the POV character, he gives off creep vibes pretty quickly. Plus, you know this is the Will Trent series but Trent is mostly absent from the opening. I will say that pays off, but it’s a weird vibe.
  • I could’ve used another few pages to check in on some of the characters at the end of the story but this is the first in a series so I’m sure we’ll get more.

What I Did Like:

  • The opening paints stressed-out working adult well. While the idea is cliche for a cop, this is done in a way that comes across as unique. It’s relatable and pays off for the story, even when we don’t particularly like that character.
  • Opening on the POV she chose here turns out to be a valuable writing tool. You are in this person’s head and following him, but you don’t get good vibes. This is used later and turns into a powerful statement. It’s well done.
  • Will Trent is a great character. Once we flip to him, his back story, and his POV the story takes on a different tone. He’s likable, realistic, and honest. I can see why he became the character she went back to. Plus, I’m a huge fan of the flawed character who is broken in a way you can relate to and struggles with life.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of police mystery/thrillers who appreciate good cops catching bad ones will like this one best.
  • I can see Patterson’s Alex Cross fans digging this series. The jump through POVs and a strong, steady main FBI character will speak to their favorite things about that series.

My Rating: 4 Stars

  • Overall, a well written detective thriller that will please fans of the genre.
