2026 Book Review: lucky

by Marissa Stapley

A Contemporary, 2021 by Simon & Schuster, 232 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • The stuff with Valerie felt a little too “fairy tale” to be realistic. But just that story line. The rest was realistic.
  • I wanted a bit more from the ending. As it is, it’s good, but with a few more details worked in it could be excellent.
  • Lucky’s trust in people is infuriatingly bad. Every time she makes a choice you feel frustrated. She distrusts people she probably could trust and trusts the people she shouldn’t.

What I Did Like:

  • The story has great vibes early on. The marks, the adopting a new character, it’s all fun to imagine. Plus, it’s realistic in the way that it’s done.
  • There’s a little mystery element to the story, in terms of Lucky’s mother and a few other details. Those are interesting and keep the story moving.
  • The author did a good job of making Lucky likable despite her obvious faults. No lies are told about who she is or what she’s done and yet we like her anyway. Good stuff.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Contemporary fans who like questionable moral characters.
  • Fans of con artist type media (like the TV show Imposters, for example).

My Rating: 3 Stars
