A Historical Fantasy, 2017 by Bedazzled Ink, 220 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- Content Warning: drug use, sex
- Sam’s chapters have a completely different vibe, which throws off the rhythm of the story. Plus, I didn’t particularly like her and that turned out to be problematic because you were supposed to.
- The pop culture references, which are never my favorite things in books, were overdone. Specifically, the death of John Lennon gets mentioned repeatedly.
- A minor thing but the library scene was unrealistic and it bothered me. I read fast (followers of the blog are aware how fast) and even I was shocked that you expected us to believe Amelia read all of those books about her in an afternoon. Skimmed them, maybe. But it’s written as if she sat down and actually read them all, gaining facts and tidbits from all of them.
What I Did Like:
- Reimagining Amelia Earhart as a “ghost” haunting her sister in the 80s is definitely a unique idea and I did enjoy that part.
- Muriel is a good character. She’s written in a way to show off her grief, from the loss of so many people in her family, and a sense of exhaustion at decades of dealing with Amelia’s legacy. It’s subtle but very well written.
- I liked the ending. It worked for the story we were telling but it left a lot to the imagination.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of historical fantasy. This one takes liberties with Amelia Earhart’s story but does justice to the time period and important facts.
