by Nicholas Sparks and M Night Shyamalan
A Romance, 2025 by Random House, 352 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- Weird start. Possibly because you don’t know the name of your main character in the first chapter, this one makes you feel a little distant from the story at first.
- Rich people problems. There’s definitely an air of this early in the story as you meet Oscar and his wife who are having a custom home built on Cape Cod. Admittedly, this is not their story, so you are a bit distanced from that vibe.
- Possibly unpopular opinion: we didn’t need the epilogue. The book was wrapped nicely with it. The epilogue adds nothing to this story.
What I Did Like:
- Compelling. Once you meet the lady practicing yoga in the house, the story gets more compelling. You are pulled in by what you understand is happening, even when the main character doesn’t quite grasp it.
- The mystery is solid. You try to chase the clues down and the reveal is satisfying in the way it’s written.
- Tate is a solid character. Heartbroken when we meet him, he makes decisions that make sense. He’s relatable and realistic.
- Establishes the rules governing the ghost clearly and sticks to them. This is important for a ghost story and it’s well done.
Who Should Read This One:
- Paranormal fans, this is a ghost story at heart. If you like a little mystery and a little romance, even better.
