A Mystery/Thriller, 2023 by Bookouture, 352 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- There a feeling of disbelief here that something so similar could happen to Millie multiple times. The book hints at instances between the two books and, of course, there’s the one you know about. It’s pretty unrealistic when you really think about it.
- No good characters to root for. I couldn’t find anyone I wanted to come out on top or be “the good guy”. I didn’t even like Brock.
- The ending is quick. The rest of the book takes its time and meanders, but then the book crashes quickly and the end almost feels rushed.
What I Did Like:
- All the clues do come together in a good way, making this a solid mystery. You get all your answers and lots of things click into place.
- Fast-paced. This one, like the last one, cruises right through the plot. It’s a quick read.
- Doesn’t linger too much on the first book. I say this as a positive because it grates on my nerves when authors spend the beginning of a sequel recapping. This jumps right into the content of this book. In fact, it never really doubles back. If you did read The Housemaid you’ll catch a few nods to it, but this can be read alone.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of the first one, obviously. This plays up on the success of the first one and what Millie learned.
- Palate cleanser thriller fans. If you turn to quick, easy-to-read thrillers as a palate cleanser between other things, this fits the bill.
