2026 Book Review: The Job of the Wasp

by Colin Winnette

A Horror, 2018 by Soft Skull, 208 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • The named sections are super long. But there are some breaks inside the sections.
  • Keeping track of the boys and their weird nicknames was tricky. I kept forgetting who was who. I gave up on a few of them.
  • Weird ending. I like endings that take risks but this one was super weird. I want more of my questions answered. I want more information. The whole thing feels unfinished.

What I Did Like:

  • Great start! The character is immediately sort of warm and someone you want to protect and keep safe, which helps the story.
  • The concept has potential, especially when things start going in a paranormal direction. I was intrigued and hoping to get more crazy details. The twins and the scene with the knife … captivating.
  • Strange, in a good way. Things don’t follow rules or happen in expected ways. It’s weird and unpredictable and that’s a compliment.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Horror fans who want unsettled vibes and a sort of slow murky plot that makes you feel off kilter from the start.

My Rating: 3 Stars

  • For the right reader, this will be a favorite.
