A Mystery/Thriller, 2025 by Thomas & Mercer, 400 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- The prologue is a bit cliche. So is the final “twist”.
- The book is broken into days but (this is minor but it happened enough to annoy me) the day starts before the break. So, for example, she’ll wake up on Thursday and have a whole conversation with someone THEN you’ll flip a page and it’ll say Thursday. Why use them if they’re not accurate?
- The main character isn’t my favorite person. She gets up to a lot of nonsense, she makes mistakes, and she’s really hard on some people. I didn’t love her so that made it tough to read.
What I Did Like:
- The mystery surrounding Cat is solid. You want to know who she is and what really happened because you don’t feel like you know everything or that you can believe what you do know, which is a good vibe.
- There are good characters in this (Theo, Cat, Noah) but they’re all minor characters. This makes it feel like you may have an unreliable narrator, which also adds to the interesting vibe.
- The opening of the Epilogue takes a stab at describing grief and growing up after a trauma. That description is beautiful. I only wish it had been a bigger part of the book.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of thrillers where the main character gets involved in something dark and sinister to unravel a cold case.
