2026 Book Review: One for the Money

by Janet Evanovich

A Mystery/Thriller, 1994 by St Martin’s Griffin, 370 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Unexpected voice right from the beginning. That’s not a bad thing, in my opinion, but call it a content warning if you need it. Stephanie is a little crass right from the start.
  • Short book. This one felt like it just flew by!
  • The ending felt rushed. You spent the book looking for the answer and it felt like it just came at you too fast. I wanted a bit more time to sort of linger with the answer.

What I Did Like:

  • Good opening for this character. It’s obvious from early in the story that this is a character we’re meeting for the first time but who will make a comeback. We’re getting to know her and I loved that.
  • I liked Stephanie and Joe’s relationship. I’m hoping he comes back for later books in the series!
  • The mystery itself worked. It made sense and it felt realistic, which I liked. This series feels like it’s starting off grounded in reality. I hope it keeps that!

Who Should Read This One:

  • Mystery fans who want an average main character in an unusual circumstance. Stephanie finds herself trying the bounty hunter life because she broke and desperately needs a job, who can’t relate?

My Rating: 4 Stars

  • As far as mystery/thrillers go, this delivered. It’ll appeal to fans of the genre.
