2026 Book Review: How to Survive a Horror Movie

by Scarlet Dunmore

YA Horror, 2024 by Little Tiger Press, 352 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • The voice of the MC comes off as cliche and fake. At times it almost reads too childlike for her age. It just didn’t read authentic.
  • I think, in general, this one was too cliche. The setting, the main character, even the general idea all felt like things that have been done before. I was sort of waiting for something original to happen.
  • The ending was a bit predictable. I figured it all out and felt like the author stacked too many obvious clues.

What I Did Like:

  • All the right elements for a classic slasher are there. At the surface, this has everything you might be looking for.
  • The ghosts are a good touch. The way they’re presented is almost humorous, keeping the story from being too dark.
  • The ending moves quickly and brings your answers at a good pace. I like when the story speeds along quickly after you get the answer.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Slasher fans who want something a bit younger with touches of humor.

My Rating: 2 Stars

  • For me the weird voice of the MC that almost struggles to place her age kept pulling me right out of the story. Plus, it was too predictable and cliche for my tastes.
