2026 Book review: Lights Out

by Navessa Allen

A Romance, 2024 by Slowburn, 416 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • I’m used to books in this particular genre (dark romance) starting with big giant content warnings so it was a bit shocking not to have that on the audiobook. Someone check … is it on the physical book? Because this book needs content warnings.
  • The premise is obvious from the first chapter. Like you know exactly what this book is going to be about and have no doubt about certain criteria that are going to be met early on. If that bothers you, skip this one.
  • There’s spice that adds to the story and then spice that becomes the story. This is dangerously close to that second category. If you strip away the graphic spice there’s not much left of this story, honestly.

What I Did Like:

  • I liked Josh and Aly right away. They come off as authentic people who you feel like you could be friends with, which is saying a lot when you consider how we meet Josh and what he believes about himself.
  • The addition of the mob connection was a bit unexpected but works. Obviously that will be the connection that brings us second (and future) books, I’m sure. It added a level of danger that wasn’t really there previously.
  • If you’re looking for graphic spice, this one definitely has that. It’s no holds barred, kinks included, spice.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of dark books who want more spice and loads of kinks. Honestly, that’s who this one is for. It’s spice for spice’s sake. It’s erotica.

My Rating: 3 Stars
