2026 Book Review: Fatal Voyage

by Kathy Reichs

A Mystery/Thriller, 2001 by Scriber, 448 Pages

Note: This is the fourth book in the Temperance Brennan series. You do NOT have to read these in order.

What I Didn’t Like:

  • It’s been said that Brennan books put way too much tiny detail into the narrative. If that bothers you, this series likely isn’t for you.
  • This one feels isolating. Although some of our minor characters are in this one, Brennan feels even more isolated and alone than normal and that transfers to the reader.
  • I wanted a little more from the ending. This one had the cliche recap for full answers and that’s just not what I wanted from a Brennan novel.

What I Did Like:

  • The mystery is satisfying. You’re curious, chasing clues with the team, and satisfied by the conclusion.
  • Having Brennan under suspicion for something felt realistic. In fact, one of the best parts of this series is how realistic it always is. The science is right and the procedure feels right. Love that!
  • A logical, brain-led Brennan is always a breath of fresh air after so many off the cuff cops who dominate this genre. She takes her time, thinks things through, and isn’t afraid to admit when she is wrong.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Mystery/thriller readers who are tired of detective or police procedural novels that feel unrealistic should try this series.

My Rating: 3 Stars
