A Mystery/Thriller, 2006 by Minotaur Books, 311 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

• The opening is a bit slow. You sort of waiting for something to happen for quite awhile at the opening of this one. In fact, extensive details are included in this one. They’re not all necessary so it makes the story move a bit slower. 
• Gamache is not my favorite character. I find him to be a bit abrupt and often almost rude. I was hoping I’d like him more as the series went on, but he was the same this time around. 
• Three characters in this one believe they’ve met/seen God and it’s only a minor detail that isn’t necessary to the plot. Why are all your characters seeing God? That seems like an odd thing for them all to share. 

What I Did Like:

• The mystery is satisfying. There’s enough clues provided to keep the reader working the case and the answers are satisfying. 
• The characters are written with flaws that make them more relatable and realistic, which I love. Everyone can be a suspect when you read these books, which is always a fun vibe for a mystery. 
• The small town is well written. Everyone seems to know everyone else and is in everyone’s business all the time, which is perfectly small town. I liked that part. 

Who Should Read This One:

• Fans of the first one, obviously, will want to continue with the series. 
• If you’re a reader who likes small town mysteries, this series may appeal to you. 
• This series is definitely more of a cozy mystery feel, despite featuring a detective.
