Note: This is the second book in a series and they do need to be read in order.
What I Didn’t Like:
- Not a lot of recap is done on the events of the first book. If it’s been awhile since you tackled the first one, you may need to give yourself a refresher.
- Slow start. The story feels like it takes awhile to get going and get into the meat of the story. When it does, it’s highly character driven, rather than plot driven as the first one was.
- The way everyone treats Murdock as “evil” irritated me. People are more complex than that. The first one seemed to be making that point but it died back in this one, which disappointed me.
What I Did Like:
- The alternate history take is interesting and fun. The mix of real players with Firefax family works to bring a new level of intensity to the story.
- All the favorites from book 1 are back. You check in either everyone in this character driven story, getting satisfying glimpses into how they’re doing now.
- Well written fight scenes. Easy to picture, accurate, and fast paced. They’re a good addition to the story.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of the first one, obviously, although I’d advise reading them close together or refreshing your memory somehow before starting this one.
- If you’re a fan of alternate style historical fantasy, this series is great!
